Just as there are no places without
the bodies that sustain and vivify them, so there are no lived bodies without
the places they inhabit and traverse (Casey, E. 2009: 25).
Artists note:
As
an artist I am constantly engaged in the world reflecting and recreating it
visually by photography and painting as a constant dialogue between what is
real and what is not. The photograph enables the artist to freeze time and
capture an immense amount of visual detail that the eye itself is unable to.
The detailing is what makes the painting feel more real. By illustrating images
of my own familiar and immediate environment and reflecting upon them in this collection, I am slowly facing the real. By re-constructing any
scenes photographed, they become approximated and familiarised to the artist.
Thanks to the invention of photography we are able to halt time and capture an
image representing our own reflections, displacements and distortions. The
process of painting from a photograph has enabled me to take the time necessary
to reflect over experiences which come in dealing with a real situation
presented to us as we traverse life in all its difficulties. I have focused on
the concept of ‘the construction of reality’ as the interplay between what is
‘real’ and what is perceived.
